About Morgen
Ceramics tutor

I worked at Portsoy Pottery for 2 years before going to Gray’s School of Art, Aberdeen in 1979, with each of the summers during the 4 year art college course spent working for different potteries. I then came to Cardiff to attend the MA Ceramics course at UWIC. That summer I had the opportunity to work at Appin Pottery for Joe Finch. On completing the one year MA course in 1984, I set up my Cardiff studio at Chapter Arts Centre where I have worked as a self employed potter ever since.

I make a wide range of tableware which is mostly made by throwing and turning. I also have a new range of tablewares that I design using CAD-CAM and produce on my hydraulic ram press. All of my work is inspired by the food that it is intended for. The surfaces are decorated using stencils derived from fruits and vegetables as I am besotted with the beauty of their forms.

I am a Fellow of the Craft Potters Association and I am on the Crafts Council’s selected index. My work has been collected by many museums including the National Museum of Wales and The Victoria and Albert Museum.

In 1998 I was appointed for the 3 year post as a Senior Research Fellow for Ceramic Practice at UWIC’s (now Cardiff Metropolitan University's) ceramics department. In 2005 I was awarded the “Creative Wales Award”.

In addition to my studio production, I have also been a part time lecturer for over 20 years on art colleges ceramic degree courses, including Bath Spa, Carmarthen and here at Cardiff Metropolitan University. I really enjoy teaching ceramics as it is always such fun! My own training at both art college and working potteries, as well as my 25 years of making decorative tableware, has given me a wide range of skills and abilities which I love to pass on to others.
