Classes
Our unique tuition programmes complement the UK school curriculum and cater for your child's individual needs, allowing them to study at a rate that is just right for them and will eventually allow them to take responsibility for their own learning. Our English and Maths tuition programmes have been developed over the last 55 years by dedicated instructional teams working across four continents. Content is revised and honed by academics and professionals with postgraduate qualifications in Maths and English. Attendance is on a "drop-in" basis during class times as each child works on their own individual development plan. Children take approximately 35 minutes per subject and attend class once or twice a week. We also offer a correspondence service which means we can offer our tuition services to students from any location, for more details on this please contact us. The Kumon Maths and English tuition programmes complement the national curriculum and work in a logical, sequential way to develop mathematics and English skills. All children are able to work at the most suitable pace for themselves meaning it is suitable for children that are struggling at school through to those that are being held back by school and require additional challenges. Our aim is to ensure that all students are studying above their school level within 6 months. Over 90% of our children study at 6 months above their school level, 25% of which are currently studying at 2 years above their age this is due to the development in potential that the maths and english tuition programmes encourage.
Ages and Levels Covered
Kumon is suitable for students of all ages and abilities; currently our youngest student is 3 years old. As Kumon is not age specific students progress at their own and therefore do not loose faith in their work. The Solihull Tudor Grange Kumon Tuition Centre attracts students from a wide area through the development of a fine reputation, we currently assist students from the following areas; Solihull, Dorridge, Knowle, Bentley Heath, Hockley Heath, Olton, Cheswick Green, Monkspath, Shirley, Hillfield, Dickens Heath, Solihull Lodge, Balsall Common, Birmingham, Hall Green and Yardley Wood. All newly enrolled students are guided through the class process by the classroom assistants who ensure they are welcomed, find their work quickly and swap completed homework for the work set for the following week. Students work under close supervision initially to settle into their new routine and receive guidance to help establish their new study skills. The time spent in class is invaluable in understanding a child's needs and how best to support and develop them. This observation time ensures work set can be individualised by the Instructor to support their development and maximise their potential. New topics are generally tackled in class, enabling a student to ask questions and feel confident prior to receiving further work to practice the subject at home. Once the class work has been completed, students take part in supplementary activities such as the "numberboard challenge" (a magnetic board game designed to develop hand eye co-ordination and number sequencing skills), reading from our library or testing mental Maths skills such as "times tables" practice. Once marked, any errors are corrected by the student assuring a positive outcome with all work completed as correct. This encourages greater confidence and boosts self-esteem as well as addressing any misunderstandings or careless errors to ensure the child is in the best position to tackle their homework. At all times students are observed working but may choose to ask for help themselves as needed, particularly as they begin to develop self-learning skills and are able to work with less dependency and intervention. Students receive feedback during class for personal achievements and good attitude but are also able to take responsibility for their own learning by being able to discuss their own development and goals where appropriate. Children wishing to collect the reward stickers do so at the end of class, which can be exchanged for prizes or retained to receive a book token on completion of their completed record card. For those students taking the end of level Achievement Test, a certificate is awarded together with a report for parents on the results achieved and the plan and content of the forthcoming level. This information is also discussed with the student to encourage motivation and progression throughout the programme. We also have lots of Kumon competitions and quizzes throughout the year, including the holiday Quests and prize winners are awarded to a selection of students. Award ceremonies take place once a year to recognise the progress of students. Certificates are awarded to students working at a higher level than their peers and those who have made significant progress in their study skills. These award ceremonies are just one of a number of ways that we recognise student achievement and encourage motivation throughout the programme and to completion.

The Kumon English tuition programme
The ability to process written information is essential in our everyday lives and the more accomplished your child is at this, the better they will do at school and the more opportunities they will have in the future.
Our English tuition programme has two central aims:
• To develop each child's ability to read and understand a wide variety of language
• To nurture in each child a life-long habit of reading for both education and enjoyment
The English tuition programme has 18 levels, containing either 200 or 400 worksheets. Our popular Recommended Reading List also motivates students to develop their skills and expand their interests by encouraging a wide range of reading.
