All this sounds amazing doesn’t it? - Too good to be true? - but is all this TRUTH or MYTH? – I’m afraid it’s mainly myth, but of course the people who produce these adverts have much to gain by misleading you. It’s a sad fact that there’s much more money in Driving Instructor Training than there is in Driving Instructing.

So how do I know?

I can confidently say that NO-ONE knows more about the driving school industry than me. (I’ve no doubt that there may some people out there who know as much as me, but I am confident that no-one knows more)!

I qualified as an ADI in 1973 and started my own school in Sheffield, which I built up (through 2 serious recessions) from one car to one of the largest, most respected and most profitable schools on South Yorkshire. During this period I also achieved grade 6 status (highest) as an instructor. I was also the initiator and proprietor of ADI Services (driving school suppliers).

After just over 30 years in the driving school business, I sold the school which is still running very successfully. I then retired to a life in the sun in Cyprus (aged 54) and later returned here because it was too hot! But that’s another story.

So clearly it is possible to earn up to and over £30k a year as I have done, but to be honest, most don’t! As a sole trader the figures simply don’t add up which my guide shows in detail.

Worse still, many poor hopefuls get ripped off for thousands of pounds in training fees and don’t even qualify. This I think is simply criminal if they are not made fully aware of the facts, but supposedly highly respected companies are getting away with this legally (hoping that their clients never read the small print until it’s too late)!

In fact the published national pass rate for part 3 of the qualifying examination is only 28%! To make matters worse, you are only allowed 3 attempts at each segment of the qualifying exams and must pass all 3 parts within a 2 year period!

It all sounds a bit miserable now doesn’t it? But it’s not all bad!

On the positive side there are ways of getting qualified that won’t cost you a fortune! It cost me nothing except £27.00 in test and licence fees (but do remember that was 1973 the test fees alone are now £278 assuming first time passes).
