Course Description/ Objectives
This will be a two-day ‘hands-on’ introduction to this 200 year old printmaking technique, delivered as a part of Cardiff Metropolitan University's Cardiff Open Art School.
Stone lithography is a planographic process in which an image is drawn, etched and printed from the flat surface of a lithographic limestone. Participants will play an active role in preparing, drawing, processing and printing their own lithographic stones.
The workshop will demonstrate the fundamental principles of lithography and will provide a historical and contemporary context in which the technique has been used.
Ian will show CSAD archival examples (including an original Paula Rego lithograph) alongside a number of prints from a collaborative project he is currently involved in.
What do students need to bring with them?
Basic printmaking tools: Apron, notebook, pencils, pens,
Source materials: Due to the short time constraints participants are asked to bring an image or idea in mind, which will then be drawn directly onto the stone.
All other technique-related materials will be provided.

Ian is a recent MFA graduate from Cardiff School of Art & Design and currently works in the Howard Gardens Gallery as a technician. He previously studied Fine Art at Winchester School of Art & Design, graduating in 2008. Whilst studying for his MFA, he received a scholarship to work as a studio assistant within the printmaking department helping to assist students and visiting artists with their printmaking. He has previously worked on an international project for the London-based artist Richard Woods.
Ian is currently involved in a collaborative project that incorporates stone lithography, drawing and mail art. The project has recently collaborated with artist Bruce Mclean and has also featured in Printmaking Today. His own work draws influence from religious iconography, archeology and science fiction; using a variety of traditional printmaking techniques to create bold and expressive works that are ambiguous in appearance.
