The aim of this course will be to explain the development and regional diversity of Islamic architecture from its beginnings in the seventh century to its decline in the eighteenth. The four slide lectures will cover the formation of Islamic architecture in the Arab world, regional developments in Spain and Morocco, the contribution of the Seljuk and Ottoman Turks, and the flowering of Islamic architecture in Persia, Central Asia and India. The lectures will examine Islamic architecture chronologically within a historical narrative and provide the religious context to explain the form, meaning and function of the buildings.
