We are Birmingham's busiest and biggest youth theatre with such a wide range of options that we guarantee there's something for everyone.
We meet at Millennium Point in Birmingham's Eastside and we follow the standard school year, with terms beginning in January (Spring), April (Summer) and September (Autumn).
We operate mainly on Saturdays during term time, where we provide a full day of opportunities to all our 200 members aged 7-21. Each term we offer at least one production option that any member can be a part of without auditioning. We always vary our shows from one term to the next to ensure that our members are learning a range of skills, abilities and styles – we often perform set texts to help members with their schoolwork and exams. We also offer at least one Skills Workshop every term with past workshops including, Choral Speaking, Musical Theatre, Technical Theatre, Shakespeare, and sometimes a second production option. Each term we also always offer a General Drama workshop option which will teach members a range of drama skills that they can then apply in their performances. Stage1 is our ‘pregroup’ for 7 – 10 year olds, to give the younger members of our company a great and fun introduction into the world of drama, acting and Stage2 as well as making new friends!
“I am so proud to think that there is such a company in our city that offers such a positive experience to young people”
- Reverend David Senior
As well as all this we also offer the following comprehensive Work Experience/Training Programme to assist members with career development and give them invaluable transferable skills – we want to encourage dynamic citizens who will make positive contributions to their communities.
• Marketing and Fundraising, which operate in the form of committees that learn a range of skills as well as carrying out real tasks such as writing press releases, designing print for the company and the shows, and researching and writing fundraising applications (including this one!) amongst a whole range of other tasks and skills.
• Peer Mentor Scheme (MBF accredited – the only youth theatre in the UK to have achieved this status). The team is made of 14 members of Stage2, who work under a Mentor Manager. Anyone can apply to be a Mentor, and all applicants are invited to an interview – the team is then chosen in the Summer and we have a new team that starts every Autumn term.
• Technical Training where we teach members lighting, sound, stage management, front of house and set/costume design that they then apply by running all backstage areas of the shows.
• Trainee Tutor Scheme made up of 5 - 6 older members of Stage2 who progress to leading workshops, managing projects etc. They also make up the Management Team, steering the company and evaluating all decisions.
On top of this we also provide loads of social opportunities to really make our members feel part of a company and make sure that they can make friends within Stage2 and also have a good time. We hold welcome events (i.e. discos/quizzes) to get to know all the new people that have joined, we go on outings to shows, week long residential trips to Butlins and occasionally Marketing Field trips to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival
